Pan-Pacific Conference XXXIV. Designing New Business Models in Developing Economies

This publication represents the Proceedings of the 34th Annual Pan-Pacific Conference being held in Lima, Peru May 29-31, 2017. The Pan-Pacific Conference has served as an important forum for the exchange of ideas and information for promoting understanding and cooperation among the peoples of the world since 1984. Last year, we had a memorable conference in Miri, Malaysia, in cooperation with Curtin University Sarawak, under the theme of “Building a Smart Society through Innovation and Co-creation.” Professor Pauline Ho served as Chair of the Local Organizing Committee, with strong leadership support of Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Jim Mienczakowski and Dean Jonathan Winterton.

Comparison of these data <strong>in</strong>dicated that<br />

Taiwanese tend to prefer Hokkaido and Ok<strong>in</strong>awa<br />

over other cities compared to visitors from other<br />

countries to Japan. On the other hand, Taiwanese<br />

tend to prefer packaged group tours (32.1%)<br />

compared to all visitors (16.1%) This is due to the<br />

fact that almost all Taiwanese visit Hokkaido <strong>in</strong><br />

packaged group tours. In contrast thereto, there is<br />

recently a gradual shift from packaged group tours<br />

to private trips among Taiwanese visitors to<br />

Ok<strong>in</strong>awa.<br />

3. Results of <strong>in</strong>terviews made <strong>in</strong> taiwan<br />

Interviews were conducted from February 14<br />

to 16, 2017 to collect on-site voices about the<br />

current situation. The <strong>in</strong>terviewees were employees<br />

at ANA Taipei Branch, OTS Taipei Office, and the<br />

Ok<strong>in</strong>awa Convention & Visitors Bureau Taipei<br />

Office. The follow<strong>in</strong>g was found through the<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviews:<br />

- Regard<strong>in</strong>g demands of air transportation,<br />

there are no decl<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> prices of exist<strong>in</strong>g air routes,<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g that there are no cannibalization effects<br />

of LCCs. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, the <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> the number<br />

of tourists is due to developments <strong>in</strong> new demands.<br />

- Lack of domestic beach resorts attracts<br />

Taiwanese to Ok<strong>in</strong>awa which is not far off from<br />

their own country. Particularly, those who actually<br />

want to hold their wedd<strong>in</strong>g at resorts such as Hawaii<br />

or Guam tend to choose Ok<strong>in</strong>awa consider<strong>in</strong>g<br />

reasonable costs and travel distance.<br />

- Taiwan and Japan have agreed on the<br />

mutual recognition of driver’s licenses <strong>in</strong> 2007, and<br />

people are not required to acquire International<br />

driver’s licenses for driv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Japan.<br />
