Pan-Pacific Conference XXXIV. Designing New Business Models in Developing Economies

This publication represents the Proceedings of the 34th Annual Pan-Pacific Conference being held in Lima, Peru May 29-31, 2017. The Pan-Pacific Conference has served as an important forum for the exchange of ideas and information for promoting understanding and cooperation among the peoples of the world since 1984. Last year, we had a memorable conference in Miri, Malaysia, in cooperation with Curtin University Sarawak, under the theme of “Building a Smart Society through Innovation and Co-creation.” Professor Pauline Ho served as Chair of the Local Organizing Committee, with strong leadership support of Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Jim Mienczakowski and Dean Jonathan Winterton.

CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSION<br />

The results show that the strategic formation process is<br />

responsibility of senior management. In most cases, the<br />

process of generat<strong>in</strong>g and approval of the strategy occurs<br />

at the same time. Also, it is observed <strong>in</strong> most cases that<br />

the responsibility to generate and approve a strategy rests<br />

with the same person. The study reveals that Ecuadorian<br />

large companies would similarly value their environment<br />

and that they consider ma<strong>in</strong>ly the political and economic<br />

aspects. Result revealed that companies would use, as a<br />

tool for environmental valuation and strategy plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the SWOT, separately or jo<strong>in</strong>tly with quantitative tools.<br />

The study found three atypical cases <strong>in</strong> terms of the<br />

generation of the strategy with<strong>in</strong> the companies, which<br />

correspond to what was expla<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the literature by<br />

Burgelman and Grove (2012), who considered strategy<br />

generation as a process <strong>in</strong> charge of middle managers.<br />
