Pan-Pacific Conference XXXIV. Designing New Business Models in Developing Economies

This publication represents the Proceedings of the 34th Annual Pan-Pacific Conference being held in Lima, Peru May 29-31, 2017. The Pan-Pacific Conference has served as an important forum for the exchange of ideas and information for promoting understanding and cooperation among the peoples of the world since 1984. Last year, we had a memorable conference in Miri, Malaysia, in cooperation with Curtin University Sarawak, under the theme of “Building a Smart Society through Innovation and Co-creation.” Professor Pauline Ho served as Chair of the Local Organizing Committee, with strong leadership support of Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Jim Mienczakowski and Dean Jonathan Winterton.

Strengthen Vietnam-Italy Tourism: Towards A <strong>New</strong> Era<br />

ABSTRACT<br />

Nowadays, thanks to the needs <strong>in</strong> recreation, leisure<br />

and travell<strong>in</strong>g, tourism has become a promis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

important economic sector. For the market of<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g countries <strong>in</strong> general and Asia <strong>in</strong><br />

particular, tourism will not only br<strong>in</strong>g economic<br />

development opportunities for the region, but also<br />

has implications for promot<strong>in</strong>g the image and native<br />

culture, strengthen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tegration and promot<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

friendship between the regions of the world. In<br />

recent years, travell<strong>in</strong>g between cont<strong>in</strong>ents has<br />

embarked on a potential phase, especially between<br />

Asia and Europe. A typical example is Vietnam and<br />

Italy. More and more people of these countries are<br />

<strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> and have the <strong>in</strong>tention of visit<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

other one. In order to meet the need of highdemand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tourists and to tighten the tourism<br />

between two countries, new ways of plann<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

carry<strong>in</strong>g out tourism bus<strong>in</strong>ess need <strong>in</strong>vent<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

This paper shows the suggestion of establish<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

partner ship between two countries and its touristsupport<strong>in</strong>g<br />

systems.<br />

REALITY<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to M<strong>in</strong>istry of Culture, Sport and<br />

Tourism of Vietnam, of all the total number of<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational visitors to Vietnam, tourists <strong>in</strong> North<br />

East Asia have a large market share. For the<br />

European market, visitors from five Western<br />

European countries are exempted from visas<br />

(England, France, Germany, Spa<strong>in</strong> and Italy) grew<br />

by 635 thousand compared to the same period <strong>in</strong><br />

2015. However, it is said that this new visa<br />

exemption policy for travellers from five European<br />

countries could boost tourism better if it was for<br />

longer than 15 days s<strong>in</strong>ce it usually takes from 20 to<br />

30 days to cover all the ma<strong>in</strong> sights <strong>in</strong> Vietnam. In<br />

2016, only around 51,000 of 10 million foreign<br />

arrivals to Viet Nam were Italian nationals.<br />

For Italy, the ma<strong>in</strong> source of <strong>in</strong>ternational tourists<br />

comes from countries like Germany, Spa<strong>in</strong>, France,<br />

Switzerland and United K<strong>in</strong>gdom. Intercont<strong>in</strong>ental<br />

tourists only accounts for a slight market share s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

the barrier of visa procedure as well as the<br />

complication <strong>in</strong> political situation. Asian market<br />

share clusters on tourist of the countries which are<br />

on Italian visa waiver program like Japan, Taiwan<br />

and South Korea. Vietnamese tourists mostly come<br />

under bus<strong>in</strong>ess and visit<strong>in</strong>g relatives model or<br />

students who are currently study <strong>in</strong> Europe<br />

travell<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g break time.<br />

TRENDS<br />

In recent years, study<strong>in</strong>g abroad is becom<strong>in</strong>g more<br />

and more popular for Vietnamese students. The<br />

level and field of study are various and attribute<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> the US, the UK, Australia and Japan. Italy<br />

is famous among Vietnamese students for cul<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

art, religious studies, architecture, fashion and art<br />

history. Besides, students who major <strong>in</strong> Italian<br />

language have the tendency to go to Italy thanks to<br />

student exchange programs between bilateral<br />

universities.<br />

Recogniz<strong>in</strong>g the needs of Vietnamese students<br />

flows to Italy, many support<strong>in</strong>g systems have been<br />

released to provide help. The Italian Embassy <strong>in</strong><br />

Hanoi, for example, has established an Office of<br />

Uni-Italia, the guidance association to academic<br />

study that provides assistance to Vietnamese<br />
