items do not appear in the abbey’s liturgical books.49 It is interesting <strong>to</strong><br />

compare the traditional <strong>of</strong>ffijice for the saint’s feast, probably a creation <strong>of</strong><br />

Abbot Remigius <strong>of</strong> Mettlach (†1095),50 with <strong>Hildegard</strong>’s Eucharius song,<br />

the responsory O Euchari columba.51 The contrast between the two is<br />

absolutely striking: the narrative structure <strong>of</strong> Remigius’ <strong>of</strong>ffijice closely follows—at<br />

times even literally quoting—the vita <strong>of</strong> its hero52 in the style <strong>of</strong><br />

a classical medieval his<strong>to</strong>ria,53 and difffers starkly from the hymnic gesture<br />

<strong>of</strong> O Euchari columba, which is devoid <strong>of</strong> any reference <strong>to</strong> the saint’s life<br />

and passion. This represents a cultural clash between two completely different<br />

conceptions <strong>of</strong> liturgical poetry, and it leaves little doubt as <strong>to</strong> why<br />

<strong>Hildegard</strong>’s song did not penetrate in<strong>to</strong> the traditional <strong>of</strong>ffijice and crack its<br />

fijirmly established unity <strong>of</strong> content and form.<br />

If this were the situation (as was very likely), then the reception <strong>of</strong> such<br />

pieces during <strong>Hildegard</strong>’s lifetime would have been restricted exclusively<br />

<strong>to</strong> the immediate realm <strong>of</strong> her charismatic authority and leadership, i.e. <strong>to</strong><br />

her own community <strong>of</strong> Rupertsberg. What, then, about the role <strong>of</strong> these<br />

and other “liturgical” creations by <strong>Hildegard</strong> within her own nunnery?<br />

Barbara Newman’s assertion that <strong>Hildegard</strong> “intended her music for Mass<br />

and the Divine Offfijice at her monastery”54 is difffijicult <strong>to</strong> prove, since there<br />

are no liturgical manuscripts extant from <strong>Bingen</strong>.<br />

There is, however, an <strong>of</strong>ten-discussed testimony that seems <strong>to</strong> plead in<br />

favor <strong>of</strong> a liturgical use <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hildegard</strong>’s unorthodox creations by her community:<br />

the statement by her secretary and intimate confijidant, Guibert<br />

<strong>of</strong> Gembloux, in his Epis<strong>to</strong>la XVIII, probably written in 1175; speaking <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Hildegard</strong> in the third person, he writes:<br />

Hence, when she [that is, <strong>Hildegard</strong>] returns <strong>to</strong> normal conversation with<br />

men from that musical consonance she hears inside, on feast days, thinking<br />

<strong>of</strong> God and remembering all such things, she enjoys the frequent resonance<br />

<strong>of</strong> the sweet melodies <strong>of</strong> the songs she hears and retains in spiritual harmony,<br />

and she wants these melodies which are more beautiful than what<br />
