ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The editors wish to express their gratitude to the persons and institutions
that have assisted in various ways in the publication of this book.
Above all, we are indebted to each of the contributors for their willingness
and enthusiasm to participate in our endeavor to create A Companion
to Hildegard of Bingen.
We are grateful to several Brill colleagues, particularly Julian Deahl
for supporting this volume from the outset, to Arjan van Dijk and especially
to Ivo Romein and Wouter Bok for guiding it to its completion, to
Christopher Bellitto (Series Editor of Brill’s Companions to the Christian
Tradition) for his advice and encouragement, and to copy editor
Meredith McGroarty. The comments provided to us by the anonymous
reviewer(s) also helped signifijicantly.
Rebecca Garber skillfully completed the fijirst copy-editing of the volume
and the preparation of the preliminary bibliography, manuscript
list, and index. She also translated from German the articles by Michael
Embach and Susanne Ruge, as well as one of the contributions by Franz
Felten. Jenny Bledsoe continued the editing work at later stages and
provided research assistance; her stalwart support was invaluable in the
preparation of this volume. John Zaleski translated a second essay by
Franz Felten.
We benefijited from the support we received from stafff members at
Harvard Divinity School, including Katherine Lou, Daniel Glade, Cole
Gustafson, Kimberly Richards O’Hagan, and Kristin Gunst; colleagues at
the Andover-Harvard Library and at the Information Technology department
were also active in their help. Assistance was also gracefully provided
and gratefully received from the libraries of Virginia Tech and of
the University of Bristol, as was scholarly advice from Hugh Feiss and
Carolyn Muessig.
In regard to the use of images, we would also like to thank the Digitalisierungszentrum
of the Universitätsbibliothek Heidelberg (especially
Anna Voellner), as well as the nuns of the Benediktinerinnenabtei St Hildegard
in Eibingen. The kindness of Angelo Cardinal Amato and the Rev.
Fr. Vincenzo Criscuolo, respectively the Prefect and the Relator General
of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, made it possible for works in
the Congregation’s archive to be consulted.
