appeared in the print edition <strong>of</strong> 1533; the work was included in Migne’s<br />
collection <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hildegard</strong>’s works in 1855.23<br />
Cause et cure is an abbreviation <strong>of</strong> Liber compositae medicinae aegritudinum<br />
causis, signis atque curis, the title <strong>of</strong> the excerpted edition by Jean<br />
Baptiste Pitra in the Analecta Sacra.24 The complete work survives in only<br />
one manuscript, discovered in the Royal Library at Copenhagen in 1859.<br />
Paul Kaiser prepared the fijirst comprehensive edition in 1903;25 Laurence<br />
Moulinier and Rainer Berndt published the fijirst critical edition exactly<br />
100 years later.26<br />
Translations in German, English, and French preceded the critical editions<br />
<strong>of</strong> both the Physica and the Cause et cure.27 In addition, a few monographs<br />
that focused on <strong>Hildegard</strong>’s medical and scientifijic works appeared<br />
in the 1990s, due in part <strong>to</strong> a resurgence <strong>of</strong> interest in herbal remedies and<br />

The two most widely cited German translations <strong>of</strong> the Cause et cure are: Heilkunde.<br />
Das Buch von dem Grund und Wesen und der Heilung der Krankheiten, trans. Heinrich<br />
Schipperges (Salzburg, 1957), and Heilwissen. Von den Ursachen und der Behandlung von<br />
Krankheiten, trans. and ed. Manfred Pawlik, 3rd ed. (Freiburg, 1994). Pawlik’s work was<br />
translated in<strong>to</strong> Spanish as El arte de sanar de santa <strong>Hildegard</strong> (Girona, 1997) and also<br />
served as the basis for the English translation Holistic Healing, ed. Mary Palmquist and<br />
John S. Kulas; trans. Patrick Madigan (Collegeville, Minn., 1994). Excerpts have appeared<br />
in On Natural Philosophy and Medicine: Selections from Cause et cure, trans. Margret Berger<br />
(Cambridge, 1999). Pierre Monat prepared the French translation, Les causes et les remèdes<br />
(Grenoble, 1997 and 2007).
