Example 2. Responsory O viriditas digiti Dei from Dendermonde, fol. 162r–v.
Set in mode three (E deuterus), with a range from C to g, the unconventional
responsory neither begins nor ends on E but instead on the
fijifth, h (or b). Many medial phrases, too, begin and/or end on the note
h (b), giving the chant a pervasively unsettled character. Perhaps Hildegard
intended this to illustrate Disibod’s (and the worshipers’) earthly
exile from God and the continuing work of preparation, or waiting, for
the Lord.
