and transform their traditional store to a modern<br />
format. Young talented and innovative retailers<br />
may look at this services differently. Conventional<br />
shop may not be the only place to do marketing. For<br />
instance, the introduction of more merchandised<br />
vending machine is a first step towards a change in<br />
retail landscape in the country.<br />
Utilisation of information and communication<br />
technology is also a key to increase the productivity<br />
of local retailers. Get <strong>Malaysia</strong>n Business Online<br />
campaign has been launched aiming to bring more<br />
SMEs online to help them transmit the information<br />
of their products to the customers. The utilisation<br />
of ICT in logistics and warehousing services has<br />
also benefited the wholesale and retail services in<br />
the form of on time deliveries of products. Many<br />
of logistic companies have implemented internetbased<br />
stocks and deliveries management systems<br />
such as online stock checks and updates, online<br />
shipping notice, RFID inventory management systems<br />
and Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking.<br />
Progress of Entry Point Projects (EPPs)<br />
Under the ETP wholesale and retail services, a total<br />
of 13 EPPs were identified. Some of the EPPs that are<br />
more short term in nature have shown its impact<br />
on the economy. They are highlighted below:<br />
• Increasing the number of large format stores<br />
To date, there are 121 hypermarkets, 113 superstores,<br />
and 133 departmental stores in <strong>Malaysia</strong>. The EPP<br />
targeted to increase the number of these stores<br />
by 61, 163, and 356 respectively. Until the end of<br />
2011, 10 hypermarkets and 17 superstores have<br />
been identified and are in development across the<br />
nation.<br />

• Modernising via TUKAR<br />
TUKAR is so far the most successful EPP under<br />
wholesale and retail NKEA. This programme aimed<br />
at transforming 5,000 sundry stores to modern<br />
retail stores. This programme has received positive<br />
response through increase participation from<br />
retail experts. Initially, there were 3 hypermarkets<br />
involved as consultants in this programme. The<br />
number increased to 12 by end of 2011. A total of<br />
519 sundry shops were successfully transformed,<br />
surpassing the target of 500 stores for 2011. The<br />
highest number of shops which benefited from<br />
TUKAR were located in Selangor and Pahang.<br />
Small retailers participated in this programme<br />
reported an increase in revenue between 30<br />
to 80% after the transformation. Small retailers’<br />
cooperatives are also encouraging their members<br />
to be participants in this programme.<br />
• Developing Pasar Komuniti<br />
The Pasar Komuniti and Pasar Karavan (PAKAR)<br />
is a programme undertaken to modernise local<br />
markets into large-sized Pasar Komuniti. There<br />
were 20 locations identified for PAKAR programme<br />
in 2011 in which four sites are under construction.<br />
• Transforming Automotive Workshops<br />
The Automotive Workshop Modernisation (ATOM)<br />
project aimed at improving their quality of services.<br />
Until December 2011, there were 55 workshops<br />
which participated in this programme with the<br />
largest number of auto shops located in Penang.<br />
• Organising Unified <strong>Malaysia</strong> Sales<br />
The Unified <strong>Malaysia</strong> Sales was launched in June<br />
2011, with the participation from 50 sectors
