in phases; so far, the Rural Transformation Centre<br />

(RTC) Gopeng has been designated as a food park<br />

servicing West Pahang, North Selangor and Gua<br />

Musang.<br />

The production of fragrant rice in non-irrigated<br />

areas will leverage on the increasing demand for<br />

this commodity, and will reduce the import bill of<br />

fragrant rice which currently stands at RM400 to<br />

RM500 million annually. A new drought-tolerant<br />

rice variety (MRQ78), which has 80% of the attributes<br />

of imported fragrant rice, has been developed by<br />

MARDI. In addition, a company has been licensed<br />

by MARDI to spearhead the commercialisation of<br />

MRQ74 which has basmati-like attributes as well<br />

as low Glycemic Index (GI). This variety is retailed<br />

as high-value organic rice as organic fertilisers<br />

and effective microorganisms (EM) are used in its<br />

cultivation. So far, 164.5 hectares of MRQ74 and<br />

MRQ78 have been planted in Kelantan, Kedah,<br />

Perlis, Perak, Seberang Perai, Melaka and Pahang,<br />

and farmers in these areas used organic fertilisers<br />

and EM.<br />

Ensuring Food Security Objectives are<br />

Consistent with Increasing GNI<br />

The EPPs under this theme will address the core<br />

issues of productivity and scale to increase self<br />

sufficiency in rice, beef and dairy products. It will<br />

also aim to replicate successful ventures in other<br />

parts of <strong>Malaysia</strong> (Table 8.6).<br />

The Muda Agricultural Development Authority,<br />

or MADA, accounts for 40% of national rice<br />

production and 22% of the total area for paddy<br />

cultivation in <strong>Malaysia</strong>. Under EPP10, issues that<br />

have previously hindered the full potential of<br />
