PRODUCTIVITY PERFORMANCE OF THE SERVICES SECTOR<br />

and management methods that will transform<br />

its productivity by quantum leap. This enables it<br />

to deliver the larger volume of works with higher<br />

quality using much less manpower and resources.<br />

The five key areas that the construction sector<br />

needs to transform are as follows:<br />

• Industrialised Building Systems<br />

IBS adoption is the key to productivity<br />

improvement. Study carried out in Singapore had<br />

shown productivity improved due to increased IBS.<br />

• Project Management Skills<br />

In order to adopt and use new technology such<br />

as IBS, many of the professionals will have to be<br />

retrained on new management methods. IBS<br />

projects require advanced early stage planning<br />

and the accelerated completion times can be very<br />

costly for mistakes and changes. Construction<br />

professionals will have to upgrade their skills to<br />

match with industry requirements. Similarly, midlevel<br />

technical personnel will have to be trained<br />

and upgraded to handle these new technologies.<br />
