The commanders then send the target's coordinates to a U.S. bomber pilot in the area,
who punches the coordinates into the computer of a "smart bomb." The bomb is fired and explodes
within 3 feet of the target.
"This sounds like science fiction, but it's really happening," said William M. Arkin, a defense
consultant and adjunct professor at the U.S. Air Force School of Advanced Air Power
Studies. More striking still, the whole process—from finding the target to dropping the bomb—
takes 19 minutes. During the Gulf War, assigning a particular bomb to a particular target took
three days.
This is called Network Centric Warfare. Clinton's military brought it to fruition. It's about
giving the on-scene commanders a much clearer picture of the battlefield. Let's take a look at
how many tanks were involved: 0. Ships: 0. Yes, there was one tactical aircraft. But also a
Quickly, let's compare the military budgets of Lincoln and Reagan.
Why did Reagan gut our military? Was it because there was no evidence that the Soviet Union
represented a threat to America and our friends and allies? No. It was because Ronald
Reagan loathed our military. After all, he did dodge the draft during World War II. He
"served" in the filmmaking department, starring in the 1942 comedy, Juke Girl alongside
Ann Sheridan. Its tagline: "Sure she's easy to meet ... but try and forget her!"
In addition to falling down on the horse front, Reagan provided absolutely no funding
for two of the other key elements of our war in Afghanistan. The Predator, a UAV (Unmanned
Aerial Vehicle), which went into production in 1997 and which was first used in
Kosovo, and the JDAM: the Joint Direct Attack Munition.
A word about JDAMs. During the first Gulf War, our "smart bombs" were laserguided
bombs that cost over $100,000 each. A JDAM, which costs $20,000, is a recycled
Cold War "dumb bomb" that has a Global Positioning System guidance unit strapped to it.
I'm not certain about this, but I was told that Roger Clinton got the idea for the JDAM while
