LISZT.
Bepoee I left Italy, however, I had seen Liszt again.
He was staying at a hotel in Rome, and he received
me most kindly. I told him I meant to go to
Weimar, and ' might I come to him ' ? He cordially
assented, and just as I was saying good-bye, he said,
' Wait a moment—I will give you a little thing to
recall me to you;' and going into the next room (his
sleeping-room), he returned, and put into my hand a
little medallion of himself, which had been struck off
at the German Embassy in commemoration of his
seventieth birthday. It was in profile. Need I say
that I treasure it with care ?
The year after I left Italy I went to Weimar; and
after taking a room at the Kron Prinz (the best hotel
there), I went off to wait on Liszt, who received me at
once, and was so kind as to send his housekeeper
round to inquire about some rooms close by, which •
he thought might suit me. They were engaged, and,
