tlie previous one. We spent three or four hours in a
most unsatisfactory manner, and saw nothing that
was in the least suitable for me. My cicerone and I
were both very tired, and she proposed our going to
rest a little at her sister's, and telling her how we
had fared. We accordingly got into a tram-car and
drove, and it seemed to me a long, long distance
before we reached the house where Sophie Petrowna
lived. The servant told us that her mistress was at
dinner, and showed us into a pretty drawing-room.
Sophie Petrowna presently appeared, and seemed
much surprised to hear that I had not cared to
engage any of the rooms we had seen that day. ' You
must be tired,' she said kindly :
' will you not come
in and have something to eat ?' I assured her that
I was far too anxious and worried to have any appe-
tite ;
but she would take no refusal, and opening the
folding-door, she brought me into the dining-room,
saying as she did so, ' Now I am going to give ,you
a great pleasure.' And there sat the Meister ! And
though he did not greet my appearance with any
special word, I could see that he was pleased, and I
quote here, as very characteristic of him, that when
Mademoiselle Heinrichsen again asked me if I would
not eat something, he broke in, before I had time to
reply with, ' Can't you make her take it, and don't be
asking it ?' I was, however, not disposed to eat, but
took a little coffee when it was brought in.
