this professor work on my friend's mind, that she
nearly quarrelled with me, when I would not leave off
studyiQg with Henselt after the first winter.
The second winter we saw much of each other, and
I had spoken of her once or twice to Henselt. The
third tinae I visited St. Petersburg, as I saw the
Meister daily, and he related much of his early life,
he mentioned the name of my friend's father, and
asked me to tell him more about her. Becoming
much interested, he declared his intention of going to
see her. I knew well that such a visit would indeed
be a pleasure to her ;
and knowing that she was very
hospitable, and would be only too charmed to have
him as her guest, I suggested his dining there on the
same day that I went. He seemed quite pleased with
the plan, but said, ' She must write and ask me.'
She was in high delight when I went out and told
her all this ; and then I was to get him to fix a day,
and to let her know through me exactly what he
would like to have for his dinner. I was to get the
receipt for his favourite soup, to find out what sort of
beer he drank, and I was myself to bring with me the
Polish bread which he always expected to find at the
houses of those intimate friends who knew his tastes,
and felt proud and happy to gratify him even in these
