The lady, her husband, and her son got out. We all
went into church together, and sat in the same pew.
There had been no opportunity for us to interchange
more than a word or two before we entered the
church ; and when the service was over, we all came
silently out until we had reached the door. There
we paused and looked at each other for a moment,
and she it was, I believe, who took the initiative by
asking me whether I intended to walk or drive to my
home. The friendly drift of her question being
