and came to him quite resolved to remain under his<br />

guidance until I had fully mastered his method.<br />

And I had, after aU, but one lesson from him<br />

For a ch-cumstance intervened which, much to my<br />

regret, hindered me from carrying out the plan of<br />

study which he had laid down for me. I at once<br />

wrote a courteous letter to him, and excused myself<br />

as well as I could for having occupied so much of his<br />

valuable time, having asked for his help with so much<br />

insistence, and yet not availed myself of that which<br />

he had so kindly given<br />

Although it is anticipating a little, I may add that<br />

when I visited Herr Deppe some years after this, I was<br />

received by him not only with comiesy, but almost<br />

with cordiality. I then told him that I had always<br />

felt myself to be his debtor for having given me his<br />

opinion in such a frank, unvarnished manner, and<br />

that even though I had not continued to study with<br />

him, yet in his one lesson he had done me immense<br />

service.<br />

He was very kind and pleasant. He spoke of a<br />

young lady who, after Anna Steinecke-Clarke was<br />

gone to America, had taken her place as his ' best<br />

pupil.' This young lady was shortly to give a per-<br />

formance to a few friends in his rooms ; and Deppe<br />

said that he would send me word when the day and<br />

hour were definitely fixed.<br />

A few mornings after this interview with Herr<br />

Deppe, a young lady called on me about nine o'clock<br />
