might not for a long time have an opportmiity of
again playing to Henselt, I was very anxious, before
I, had the last lesson at Warmbrunn, to show him
that I had in a measure understood both what he
wished me to lay aside and what he wished me to aim
at. I took, therefore, his beautiful study, Entschwun-
denes Gliick, practising each hajid by itself, very
slowly, note by note, for nearly a fortnight during the
time that I was also playing Cramer's studies. He
was kind enough to let me play it to him the day
before he left Warmbrunn. At the end of about a
line he called out, ' Eosalie, Eosalie !' and when his
aged wife came in he bade her in a pleased tone
' Stay and listen to the Miss,' and when I had
concluded, he said that he was sure Scharwencka
would be very much pleased with what I had been
doing. Both he and dear Prau von Henselt were as
hearty and cordial to me that day as if they had been
my own relations; and, as I was going away, both
kissed me, and he said, with a ring in his rough
voice, which I now recall with a glow of pleasure,
' Solche momente machen das Leben angenehm.' Yet
this was not my good-bye to Henselt, for their house-
keeper told me that he received all friends who wished
to say good-bye to him early in the morning, about an
hour before his departure.
It was the habit of his friends in Warmbrunn, as
well as in St. Petersburg, to bring him a bouquet as a
parting greeting. I happened to be the first to arrive
