might not for a long time have an opportmiity of<br />

again playing to Henselt, I was very anxious, before<br />

I, had the last lesson at Warmbrunn, to show him<br />

that I had in a measure understood both what he<br />

wished me to lay aside and what he wished me to aim<br />

at. I took, therefore, his beautiful study, Entschwun-<br />

denes Gliick, practising each hajid by itself, very<br />

slowly, note by note, for nearly a fortnight during the<br />

time that I was also playing Cramer's studies. He<br />

was kind enough to let me play it to him the day<br />

before he left Warmbrunn. At the end of about a<br />

line he called out, ' Eosalie, Eosalie !' and when his<br />

aged wife came in he bade her in a pleased tone<br />

' Stay and listen to the Miss,' and when I had<br />

concluded, he said that he was sure Scharwencka<br />

would be very much pleased with what I had been<br />

doing. Both he and dear Prau von Henselt were as<br />

hearty and cordial to me that day as if they had been<br />

my own relations; and, as I was going away, both<br />

kissed me, and he said, with a ring in his rough<br />

voice, which I now recall with a glow of pleasure,<br />

' Solche momente machen das Leben angenehm.' Yet<br />

this was not my good-bye to Henselt, for their house-<br />

keeper told me that he received all friends who wished<br />

to say good-bye to him early in the morning, about an<br />

hour before his departure.<br />

It was the habit of his friends in Warmbrunn, as<br />

well as in St. Petersburg, to bring him a bouquet as a<br />

parting greeting. I happened to be the first to arrive
