Just a year later than this the editing of 'Five<br />

Centuries of Musicians' Letters,' a work in which I<br />

had been long engaged, was so far advanced that I<br />

made no delay in asking Henselt to sanction some<br />

letters of his being included in my collection. I sent<br />

him a long and very characteristic letter which he<br />

had written to a Fraulein Bonterwek, a friend of<br />

early youth. Among various other matters, this letter<br />

made mention of an offer made to him to undertake<br />

the tuition of certain princesses. The three follow-<br />

ing letters from Henselt are in reference to the<br />

above :*<br />

' HoNOtTEED Madam,<br />

'Warmbrunn, July 30th, 1885.<br />

'I have received your kind letter, and gladly<br />

comply with your wishes. Yet, unless there are too<br />

many difficulties in connection with doing so, don't<br />

you think that for my own sake and that of the world<br />

in general I ought to see the original of my own<br />

letter ? For— you will be surprised—I have no recollection<br />

of the offer referring to Berlin. Such an<br />
