I told him that I had quite made up my mind to<br />

go to St. Petersburg in order to make a thorough<br />

study of his method with Mademoiselle Katy Eanus-<br />

chewitz, provided only that I could be sure of having<br />

a suitable home when I arrived there.<br />

Henselt, who was at all times chary of speech, and,<br />

except on rare occasions, very undemonstrative,<br />

merely observed, 'You are doing the right thing.'<br />

Then, after a few minutes, he added, 'It is not to<br />

Mademoiselle Eanuschewitz, but to Mademoiselle<br />

Heinrichsen, that I should wish you to go, if you<br />

indeed follow up yoUr plan. She is, indeed, no artist<br />

like the former, but she has taught for twenty-five<br />

years in the Imperial Institutes, and she is, of all<br />

my teachers, the one who understands my method<br />

best.'<br />

I wrote, accordingly, to this lady, and asked her if<br />

it would be possible to find a nice family who would<br />

give me rooms and board, for that by Henselt's advice<br />

I wished to study his method under her guidance. I<br />

also asked her if she could arrange to meet me at the<br />

railway-station on my arrival in St. Petersburg; for,<br />

as I did not know a word of Eussian, I should not be<br />

able to direct the coachman where to drive me.<br />

Henselt must, I believe, have written to her about<br />

me, for she replied without any delay, and all she said<br />

seemed most clear and satisfactory. She promised to<br />

meet me at the railway-station, and to accompany me<br />

to a hotel, where I could remain until I had seen
