municated his feeling of a movement by a gesture —a
•word, a light touch on the pupil's arm, or by playing
with one hand along with the pupil. His glance was
full of power, and he moved with so much dignity
that he did not suggest at the first glance that he
was ' a little man ' (though he was much below the
average height) ; and every line of his face told of
thought, feehng, and sensibility held in lifelong re-
straint by a will that never let go the reins. His
voice was (excepting two others, one of whom was a
little-known poet who has ' also gone to his rest ') the
sweetest, the most refined in timbre, that I have ever
heard. Its tone seemed to come right from the heart.
His words were few, and ever well chosen and to
the point; and there was a ring of truth in all he
uttered, that carried conviction to the hearer that
here was one who could not and would not lie—no,
nor dilute the truth by telling it by halves. His
laugh was gleeful and childlike ; I remember it well,
as one of his most characteristic outward traits.
Another was 'a habit he had of rubbing his hands
energetically together when something had especially
pleased him. When a lesson had been exceptionally
satisfactory, he would go off rubbing his hands, and
once or twice he has even laughed to himself as he
left th& room. He had thrown himself so heart and
soul into the lesson, with all his attention concen-
trated in helping, encouraging, and fully understand-
ing the pupil, that he in fact identified himself with
