perfectly well that it had been only studied for a week
or ten days, ' Such a piece one may make a study of
but to play it^no, that is the work of a lifetime;'
and then he would sit down and play it two or three
times in succession, each time working himself more
deeply into it.
Summer came at last, and though I meant to
return to Great Britain and see all my friends,
yet I was deep in the charm of the school,. and the
only consideration that hindered me from at once
going to Warmbrunn was the fact that it would be
only on the old Seller that I should hear Henselt
play, and have any lessons he might be pleased to
give me. I thought of going to Liszt, who had, I
was told, expressed much interest in me ; and
Mademoiselle Eanuschewitz and I had almost ar-
ranged to go off together. I did not, however, think
it quite the thing to carry out this plan without con-
sulting Henselt. Accordingly, at my next lesson, I
asked him whether he would approve of my studying
with Mademoiselle Eanuschewitz during the summer,
as we thought of going to Liszt together. He did not
say much, either for or against, that day ; after the
following lesson, however, he rather surprised me by
the quaint question, ' Warum spekuliren Sie auf
Fraulein Eanuschewitz, und nicht auf mich?' I
replied that I had been rather spoiled in St. Peters-
burg, always having my lesson on a grand piano, and
that he must know it was not quite the same thing to
