I had not, through all the rush and whirl of these
days, forgotten the Steinecke-Clarkes. On reaching
Berlin, I at once went to look for them. I wished
much to tell them all that had happened to me since
we had last seen each other—wished to show them
that I was coming very near their school. Even at
that early stage of my tone -perceptions I felt that
Herr Deppe's method had some points of analogy with
the school of Henselt. They, however, had gone to
live in Charlottenburg, and, much as I desired to see
them, I could not give an entire day to going out
there. I wrote, therefore, to them—told them I was
going to St. Petersburg on a given day, and begged of
them to come and see me before I started. They,
however, did not realize that the journey was quite
a settled thing. I suppose my letter had not been
sufficiently explanatory, for they did not reply for a
day or two, and it was not until the morning of the
day I left that I had a card from them to say ' It was
impossible I could have so suddenly decided on going
so far,' and begging me to wait a little—to come out
and see them. For the next few days they would not
be able to come into Berlin ;
but surely I could not be
in such a hurry to go to Russia. Though they were
too busy to come to Berlin for the next day or two,
could not I come out to them ?
