visiting at the Eubinsteins' house. This affair in the<br />

Conservatorium ! You know, signorina, that my<br />

husband has been obliged to take part with his<br />

countrymen, and, in an article written by him in one<br />

of the daily papers, has animadverted strongly on the<br />

mode of proceeding adopted by Eubinstein. The<br />

result was that when I met Madame Eubinstein in<br />

the street the other day, she paused for one moment,<br />

just to tell me, with expressions of regret, that her<br />

family and mine could not continue to visit each other.'<br />

On this same day when I spoke to Henselt about<br />

Eubinstein, a little before two, I heard his well-<br />

known step on the stairs, and as I opened the door<br />

to admit him, he took off his fur in silence ; and<br />

instead of at once making me sit down to the<br />

piano, he said briefly, ' Please, some plain paper, a<br />

good pencil, and don't interrupt me for a quarter<br />

of an hour.' And sitting down, he wrote rapidly,<br />

€very now and then saying, as he paused for a<br />

moment, 'You will be surprised, very much sur-<br />

prised !' When he had finished writing, he handed<br />

the paper to me, saying, ' Eead that ' ; and I was<br />

indeed surprised, but even more concerned than<br />

surprised, for it was a draft of a letter to Eubinstein<br />

which he had just written, and in it he had, in ex-<br />

pressing his sympathy with Eubinstein's difficulties,
