with regard to metronomic indication you risk a
great deal, for just on this point I frequently differ
from the composer ; and, after all, of what great
importance is it ? I shall, however, place the
metronomic indications in the pieces as you wish. I
quite agree with what you say to me about the pedal,
for I also mark nothing more than " Pedal " at the
beginning of my compositions. A whole number of
quite new effects could be brought into play, where
the pressure has to fall on the second (the unaccented)
note of the bar. A question regarding the indications
of performance, if we could possibly introduce them
in German ? I mean to send you soon my Phan-
tasiestiicke, and you can see that it looks very well.
Thus, instead of Allegro, Easch or Feurig, and so on,
etc.* As to E. E., make yourself easy; at the bottom
he is an ass, who thinks that with words he is able to
say everything ; in other ways, a good sort of fellow
in whom one can feel no further interest. Clara
plays the Study in the way in which it is most
effective, i.e., beginning with a Wave figure ; and it is
well that you only mean to publish it so. The varia-
tions in F are not yet out;t I believe Clara plays
them incomparably. I don't enter the house, as you
may perhaps know.
