Letter from von Bxjlow to Hensblt.
' Highly honoured Meister,
' October 27th, 1864.
'You may have probably taken it somewhat
amiss that when you were staying in Gersdorf I did
not return you the manuscript which you had lent
me, i.e., your truly enchanting arrangement of Weber's
Sonata in D Minor. Yet, though accountable for this
delay, I am not altogether so much to blame as you
may imagine. I have just passed through a very
trying time, and it is only within the last fortnight
that I have so far recovered from a very distressing
form of indisposition as to be able to resume my
pianoforte studies. The copyist had, moreover, left
me in the lurch, and there was nothing else for it but
to imprint your arrangement firmly on my memory.
If I had not done this, it would have been impossible
for me to enrich my Concert Eepertoire with this
pearl (as you have kindly sanctioned my doing). My
performance of it will, I hope, leave you no occasion
to regret that you have granted me this favour. It
may perhaps even prove me worthy of your bestowing
on me another of the same kind, i.e., your letting me
see your interpretation of Weber's second sonata, that
in A flat ? I earnestly hope, highly-esteemed and
much-honoured Meister, that these lines, which the
Schlesinger firm have kindly undertaken to forward
with the manuscript, will find you in good health and
