Time, meanwhile, had sped on. I had arranged to
join some friends from my own country at Hombourg
ia the month of August, and fully intended to remain
on in Berlin until then. The summer that year
was, however, intolerably hot ; and feeling myself
quite unable to work any longer, I went off to a little
bathing-town on the Baltic Sea, of which I had
heard a most charming description from a friend who
had once or twice passed her summers there. I
arrived the second week in July, meaning to stay
until my friends should have arrived at Hombourg.
I immediately found a room in a small hotel, where
they took people en pension, by the week or the day.
Though I did not mean to study much during the
great heat, yet I wished to have a piano ; but I
found, on inquiry, that the only means of procuring
one was to order it down by the railway at great
