of their lady, I was by marrying the owner of the
next estate to be planted near her for the remainder
of my life ! How they did enjoy the dance in the
barn, where, to my astonishment, there were only a
few tallow candles to light up the scene
And now again returning to music and Henselt,
I have to tell that, although I intended after the
summer was over to spend the early part of the
winter in St. Petersburg, this was not to be. Cour-
land lies low, and in a place where I had everything
to make me happy, and where we rambled in fields
full of wild-flowers, in woods where all was song and
all disposed for summer reverie, summer enjoyment,
I grew so ill and languid that I had to seek in the
Engadine renewal of health and energy. In January,
however, I wished to go to Henselt ; but the friend
who had the most leisure to seek fit quarters for me
failed to find exactly what suited. We corresponded
and discussed all the pros and cons of the various
quarters which she suggested to me. At last, when
March came, I decided on waiting in Germany until
Henselt came to Warmbrunn, and spending my
summer there.
It was on an afternoon early in June that I found
myself once more in Warmbrunn; and as I knew
that there was a great shadow over the Von Henselt
household, instead of going directly to greet the
family and announce my arrival, I took temporary
quarters in a nice Mtel garni close to the promenade
