top of the house. It meant simply being on a sort<br />

of treadmill for that day and a half. When the<br />

weary quest was over, he was to have accompanied<br />

E to supper at our house. The latter, however,<br />

to my surprise and disappointment, appeared alone,<br />

and his expressive face told me before he had uttered<br />

a word that there was something wrong.<br />

' Well, but where is your friend ?' was my salutation<br />

to him as he came in.<br />

' Ah, signorina, he is very ill, and though the<br />

doctor has not said so, I believe that he is in great<br />

danger !' and then he told me how that afternoon<br />

P had, after finally securing a suitable room, met<br />

him by appointment at a caffe. He seemed much<br />

exhausted, but cheerful and full of hope, full of plans<br />

for the future. All of a sudden he was seized with<br />

an internal paia of such violence that he at once said<br />

he was dying. ' It became worse and worse until by<br />

his own wish,' continued Signor E-—, 'I took him<br />

to the hospital. Various remedies were applied to<br />

relieve him, but he was not better when I left him,<br />

about an hour ago.'<br />

' Are visits allowed in the hospital ?' was my next<br />

query of Signor E .<br />

'Oh yes, signorina; but only by an order, for<br />

which one must apply beforehand. I have one in<br />

my pocket ; and Sgambati, on whom I called on my<br />

way to you, has arranged to accompany me to the<br />
