HENSELT .323
Zschocher and Topfer, often talk with me about you.
When you visit Leipzig and Dresden, why not also
come on to Weimar? Please answer this modest
question by coming yourself to see.
' Yours, etc.,
Translated from the Gervian.
' Feanz Liszt.'
Address read and presented to Henselt on the occasion
of his Jubilee, April 21, 1888, by Eubinstein, at
St. Petersburg.
' Highly honouebd Here von Henselt,
' This day fifty years since, you who then
already were a famous and honoured member of the
European world of music, devoted your great powers
and faculties to our Fatherland. Faithful and highly
gifted, you have, without interruption, throughout
these years served our noble art as a brilliant virtuoso
—the composer of a series of pianoforte works which
have ranked, and shall never cease to rank, with the
choicest masterpieces of contemporaneous musical
literature. You have, finally, been the representative
of a pedagogic system which, in your hands, has
received a genuinely, earnest productive and formative
stamp. In all the above departments your energy
has been untiring. Active throughout a whole half-
century, you were on all sides met with the most pro-
found respect, the most unfeigned admiration, the
most cordial affection.
