In passing Henselt's house on my way to church, I<br />

rather divined than actually saw that he was in the<br />

hall, and just coming out at the door. Knowing him<br />

to be short-sighted, I hoped by hurrying on to avoid<br />

a meeting. He had, however, seen me, and called<br />

out my name quite loud enough to attract my atten-<br />

tion. I made, however, as if I had not heard him,<br />

and had nearly succeeded in entering the church door,<br />

when a lady who knew me (one of his lady-professors)<br />

came up with me, and saying, ' You must come and<br />

speak to the Meister, he is calling after you,' she put<br />

her arm through mine, and brought me back to the<br />

church gate, where Henselt had paused for a.<br />

moment.<br />

When I came towards him, slowly and reluctantly,<br />

his first words were, ' You have been very candid with<br />

my wife ; why could you not have been the same with<br />

me?'<br />

'But are we not just going into church, dear<br />

Meister ?' I rejoined, in a tone which suggested that<br />

here was neither time nor place for a discussion.<br />

' True,' he replied ;<br />

minute you come out of church.'<br />

' but mind you come to me the<br />

It was a curious interview that Sunday morning<br />

for when I came into Henselt's sanctum, he pulled<br />

over a chair, and placing it opposite to his own, and<br />

as near as it well could be to him without touching<br />
