It may be imagined that I thought much over all I
had heard at the Liszt afternoons. Strangely enough,
a certain conversation with Paul Eckhoff always re-
curred to me in a most persistent manner whenever
my thoughts turned to Weimar. This talented young
pianist had shown me some technical finger-studies
of his own composition, which he said were so ex-
tremely difficult that but few could execute them.
Looking at these, I played them at once (as I thought)
with ease, and as I repeated them once or twice, I
asked, ' Are these the very difficult studies of which
you have been telling me?' To which he replied,
' Yes ; they are the difficult studies which I have
invented, and you will not be able to master them.'
He said this very politely, but with an air of great
conviction ;
and, on my continuing to repeat the notes
of the studies in question over and over again several
times, though he did not repeat what he had said,
