3o8 MV MUSICAL EXPERIENCES
you must have patience until September, i.e., until,
with God's help, I arrive in St. Petersburg. (It
refers to my official jubilee of the year 1888.) '*
' Highly honoured Madam,
' St. Petersburg, April 16th, 1888.
' I beg ten thousand pardons ; thought all had
been despatched. I send you all that I still have of
Liszt's. Forgive my unbecoming brevity and hurry ;
I am under the influence of the many engagements,
arising out of the jubilee. With the greatest esteem,
' Your obedient
' Ad. Henselt.'
Letters of Liszt which I shall make known else-
where were enclosed in the letter. A few days later
he also sent me letters of Hans von Biilow, Llooff,
Hummel, Schumann. I let Henselt's last letter
follow here. It runs thus :
' Highly honoured Madam,
'July 30th, 1888.
' I cannot with certainty recall the year that I
was at Liszt's for two days ; I had not the honour of
* Liszt's letter to the Barouess Wrangel, as likewise his
album-leaf to Henselt, with the letter of thanks which the
latter wrote to him, were published by me in the third volume
of the ' Musical Portrait Studies,' fifth and sixth edition
(Henselt-sketch) ; also' in the second volume of ' Five Cen-
turies of Musicians' Letters.'
