TAUSIG.
DuKiNG the time when I was still a pupil of Stern-
dale Bennett, I came accidentally into contact with
Tausig. I brought away from the one occasion on
which I heard him an impression which no lapse of
time has been able to efface. It was in the month of
February, and my mother and I were staying in
Berlin, where we had been detained by my having
had scarlet fever in a very severe form. We were
both anxious to return home, and the day of our
departure had been nearly settled on, when some
friends of the lady in whose house we were staying
mentioned a concert to be given in the following week
by an artist whose name, though unknown to us, was,
it appeared, of Continental celebrity. The manner in
which this lady spoke of Tausig excited in me a great
desire to hear him. He was to play nothing but
