looked into the coach to see if I was inside. So little
had I dreamed of asking her to come and meet me,
that I had not told her whether I should come on
that day or the one following. And there she was,
so pleased and so cordial, all affectionate anxiety to
have me under her uncle's guidance, and to make me
feel happy and at home in Warmbrunn.
She took me at once round the village to look for
rooms, but we did not then succeed in lindiag any
that were quite suitable. Then we had some dumer
at a restaurant ; and I suspected that our search for
rooms would recommence after we had rested ourselves
a little. But I found that Prau von Henselt ha^
invited me to take coffee with her ; and though I had
not the least wish to be seen for the first time ia
my very plain but comfortable travelling-dress, and
though I urged that I was very untidy—having spent
the whole of the previous night in the train—my
friend laughed at me, said I looked very nice, was
pertinacious, and finally marched me off to the Villa
von Henselt. All I here beheld was entirely different
to anything I could have pictured to myself before-
hand. Frau Mila had spoken as if her uncle occupied
a palace in St. Petersburg ; and having never been
before in a small German watering-place, the only
ideas I had were of places like Hombourg and Baden-
Baden. Warmbrunn was quite a deliciously primitive
village.
