it was not a mere lesson he gave, but an hour of his
life, in the fullest sense of the word. Although
he gave from ten to twelve hour -lessons a day
when the season was at its height, I have never
caught him looking either jaded or absent, and he
has given me more than once the last hour of his
long day's work. ' I add, for the benefit of those who
may perhaps say, ' He may not have been so with
all,' that in a school where for many years he gave
from ten to twelve consecutive hours, it was impos-
sible to gather from his manner which was the nio&t
or the least clever pupil, so thoroughly did he mterest
himself in each individual. Prom the zest with which
he went into every special beauty of the composition
which was being studied, it would have been diificult
to realize that he was not just entering a new and
enchanting region, instead of (as was the case) walk-
ing over well-trodden, old, familiar ground. And his
sense of enjoyment communicated itself to the pupil,
and gave life and charm to all one learned from him.
There must be many of his pupils whose experience
would confirm mine on this point.
His instruction as to how the time of a piece should
be started was the best I have ever heard. I will
try to give it, though I cannot remember the telling
and concise words in which he expressed it.
