writing. Not being able to hold ' (the sheet) ' with my
left hand, I find writing very difficult.

In the middle of the following summer the third
volume of ' Musical Portrait-heads appeared,' and
Henselt thanked me for the gift in these words
' Highly ebspectbd Madam,
' Warmbrunn, September 3rd, 1875.
' After all the kindness, all the honour you
have shown me, the least I could do, according to my
feeling on the subject, would be to convey my thanks
to you in person. But the* accident that happened to
my hand demands so many things, that, if God will, I
must look forward to the next year as being more
favourable. Do not therefore disdain to receive in
this manner my most heartfelt thanks. I have read
your other essays with the deepest interest. . . .*
