he had thought out for himself while yet a mere boy,<br />

that he was not only able to play the tenths—of<br />

which there are so many in the finale of this sonata<br />

but all the notes that lie between these extreme<br />

intervals, without any semblance of effort. His touch<br />

was deep, and yet he seemed to have the power of<br />

nipping out, whenever he chose to do so, a pianissimo<br />

the timbre of which was at once most penetrating<br />

and yet most exquisitely delicate. In the left-hand<br />

accompaniment of the finale of Weber's sonata his<br />

phrasing was most charming, and he was at great<br />

pains to make his pupil understand exactly what he<br />

wished. Just as this lesson was over there was<br />

another arrival—a gentleman, who walked in silently<br />

and took a seat close by me. I glanced round at him,<br />

and perceived with some amusement that he was the<br />

very Professor Zschocher whom Liszt had introduced<br />

to me on the day he paid me a visit at the Kron<br />

Prinz Hotel in Weimar. We just smiled a recog-<br />

nition at each other ; and Henselt, in rising from the<br />

piano, perceived him, and, after exchanging a very<br />

cordial greeting, they got at once into a most ani-<br />

mated discussion. It was about a new edition of<br />

Moscheles' Studies, which Henselt was eager to see<br />

in print without delay ; and he worked himself into a<br />

state of the greatest excitement as he inveighed<br />

against the slowness and nonchalance of his pub-<br />

lishers. As he seemed to have entirely forgotten that<br />

I was there, I had all the more opportunity of ob-<br />
