Letter op Schumann to Henselt, 1837.
' To the Musician Adolph Henselt, Breslau.
'My dear Sir,
'Leipzig, August Slst, 1837.
' Your letter has been a great pleasure to me
I trust mine will be the same to you. To begin with,
best thanks for so speedily complying with my re-
quest. It will not, however, quite answer to take
the Study in B Major,* as the Schlesingers might
not be pleased. I thought of the Study in E Minor, +
which Clara played lately at her concert ; but it is
not a composition for the many. I will, however,
see. What would please me best of all would be,
if you could send me as soon as possible a study,
or some smaller piece that would not be published
anywhere else before the New Year. Accordingly,
nothing that Hofmeister is bringing put, but anyhow
something fine.; I cannot fall in with your idea of
making the B Major Study begin with the simpler
form ; they both lose when so placed, and make the
study look like a variation. Let it remain as an
andante, and give it the title of " Andante and Etude,"
or, if you wish an antique title, call it " Preludium
and Study," or whatever else you like. I am not for
