It was a truly instructive summer, for besides<br />

having a lesson from him once every week, I had<br />

the advantage of being present at the lessons of two<br />

other pupils who also played to him every week.<br />

He taught one lady Weber's Concert Stuck ; and I<br />

have heard him play it several times, though never<br />

the whole at a time.<br />

His playing of Weber's Momenta Capricioso was a<br />

marvel of delicate elastic tones, and he observed him-<br />

self, after playing it (I entered it in my note-book at<br />

the time), ' It is not a question of hearing either nail,<br />

or bone, or flesh, but pure tone.'<br />

It was one of Henselt's peculiarities that he would<br />

listen to the practice of a pupil, if he got the chance<br />

of doing so, and if he considered that the work was<br />

being done without conscience, he would observe the<br />

next time the pupil was playiag to him, ' No wonder<br />

that you have not conquered that difficulty ;<br />

If you had practised the piece with both hands at<br />

the same time, instead of studying with each hand<br />

separately, he invariably perceived it, and would tell<br />

drill had been relaxed even for a few days, and yet the<br />
