went to the Dom—not only because one was sure of
always hearing a good sermon there, but also at-
tracted by the famous choir of men's voices, and the
further advantage of the museum being close by, into
which I often turned after service, to spend a quiet
hour among the early Italian masters. It was always
necessary to be early at the Dom Kirche, if one
wished to secure a good seat, and it is a curious fact
that I never remember having been so late in setting
off for church as on the eventful morning which was
to prepare the way for bringing me into personal
contact with Henselt. Looking at my watch when
seated in the tram-car, which was going in the
direction of the Dom, I saw that by the time we
should arrive there I should be far too late to get
anything like a good seat ; and as I observed a hymn-
book in the hand of the lady who was sitting beside
me, I thought she might possibly be on her way to
some other church which we should reach before
service had commenced. Turning to her, I asked if
there was any church nearer to us in which the
preaching was good. The lady whom I had addressed
did not at once answer me ; but while she seemed to
be making up her mind which church to recommend,
another lady whom I had not before observed, and
who was sitting right opposite to me, said in a
pleasant tone, and with a glance of kindly interest,
' My husband and I are just getting out of the tram
