startled me by walking in and saying, 'You are a<br />

little out of step, my child, and must come to me to-<br />

morrow.' I had been working at one of Moscheles'<br />

most difficult studies on the shake.<br />

This winter I made an entry after every lesson of<br />

what I had played, .and every siagle observation of<br />

Henselt's, whether favourable to me or not, stands<br />

recorded there.<br />

He still insisted on my playing much of Cramer, for<br />

he held that to anyone who can play Cramer really<br />

well, everything else comes easy.<br />

In February of this year I studied Mendelssohn's<br />

First Concerto with him, and had the great enjoyment<br />

of playing it three times on his grand Becker, he<br />

playing the second piano. His lessons on this com-<br />

position were highly instructive, and I have noted<br />

down all that he said. He then told me to study<br />

Hummel's grand Concerto in B Minor, and before<br />

I had had a lesson in it he went off to Moscow for<br />

ten or twelve days. On his return I went round at<br />

once to ask when he would give me an hour; and<br />

I may mention as one of Henselt's characteristic<br />

traits, that although he never received a visit, yet<br />

when there was work in question he was always<br />

accessible, even if only for a moment, and would<br />

come out into his ante-room, notebook in hand, and<br />

saying without any preamble, ' Well, what do you<br />

want?' would at once settle to give the hour, note<br />

it in his book, and dismiss you without losing any<br />
