in the morning, and said she had come to tell me
that in two hours' time Fraulein S was to play
a long programme of pianoforte pieces in Herr
Deppe's rooms. ' It seemed a short notice to give
you,' said the young lady ;
' but the arrangement was
not made until the previous day, and I came round
in the evening to tell you of it, but concluded every-
one must have been out, as I rang several times at
the bell, and had to go away without even seeing
anyone with whom to leave the message.' I was
very glad indeed to have this opportunity of hearing
another of Herr Deppe's pupils, and one, moreover,
whom he himself put forward as being an admirable
exponent of his method. At the hour named I
accordingly rang the bell at his door, and found
myself, on entering the anteroom, among a set of
young girls—all very quiet-looking, and all just as
simply dressed as if there was nothing more in
question than a walk into the country. The young
lady who had opened the door to admit me ushered
me into the music -room, where I found the genial
musician sitting on a sort of ottoman-sofa, which
was placed nearly opposite to the piano. A middle-
aged lady (a person of rank, whose name I do not
now recollect) was sitting beside him, engaged, as it
seemed to me, in a very earnest discussion. When
I appeared, however, Herr Deppe rose at once to
receive me, and courteously asked me where I would
