she was by marriage a favourite niece of Adolf von
Henselt, of St. Petersburg, who was, according to her,
the greatest pianoforte authority of the age.
When I parted that forenoon from Frau Mila, it
was settled that I was to go with her the following
evening to hear some very good pupils of the late
Herr Vogt play in KuUak's Conservatoire. That
evening cemented our intimacy, and before long I
almost invariably spent my Sunday afternoons with
Frau Mila. We used to talk about Scharwencka,
Deppe, the Steinecke-Clarkes, and what they said,
and then of the musical labyrinth out of which I was
vainly trying to find my way. She would often say
to me, ' If you could but see my uncle, and be under
his guidance, he would soon smooth away all your
difficulties.'
