tinguished young Eussian pianist—a pupil of Nicolas<br />

Eubinstein (brother of Antoine)— played a Tausig-<br />

Berlioz piece with great hravura; Herr Eeisenauer<br />

and Fraulein Emma Koch played some duets at<br />

sight; there was some singing, some violia-playing<br />

by a very clever little boy of eleven, and then a small<br />

slight girl sat down and charmed me by the ease and<br />

beautiful clearness with which she played one of<br />

Listz's Rliapsodies hongroises. As she concluded<br />

this, Liszt came over to the piano ; and as she<br />

curtsied to him he kissed her on the forehead, his<br />

custom when the playing of a lady found favour with<br />

him.<br />

' Who is she, and with whom has she studied ?' I<br />

asked of a lady who was sitting beside me.<br />

' She is my daughter,' was the reply, ' and the only<br />

pupil of his <strong>Ex</strong>cellency Herr von Henselt, of St.<br />

Petersburg.'<br />

I cannot remember all that was played that after-<br />

noon, for, like those around me, I was far more<br />

occupied in watching the Meister's movements and<br />

trying to catch his words, than in either listening to<br />

the music or getting into talk with my neighbours.<br />
