but his expressive face showed the most cordial
interest in all that was going on. Silotti, the dis-
tinguished young Eussian pianist—a pupil of Nicolas
Eubinstein (brother of Antoine)— played a Tausig-
Berlioz piece with great hravura; Herr Eeisenauer
and Fraulein Emma Koch played some duets at
sight; there was some singing, some violia-playing
by a very clever little boy of eleven, and then a small
slight girl sat down and charmed me by the ease and
beautiful clearness with which she played one of
Listz's Rliapsodies hongroises. As she concluded
this, Liszt came over to the piano ; and as she
curtsied to him he kissed her on the forehead, his
custom when the playing of a lady found favour with
him.
' Who is she, and with whom has she studied ?' I
asked of a lady who was sitting beside me.
' She is my daughter,' was the reply, ' and the only
pupil of his Excellency Herr von Henselt, of St.
Petersburg.'
I cannot remember all that was played that after-
noon, for, like those around me, I was far more
occupied in watching the Meister's movements and
trying to catch his words, than in either listening to
the music or getting into talk with my neighbours.
