MY MUSICAL EXPERIENCES
' The Conservatoire of St. Petersburg, which is
proud to rank you amongst its members, greets you
to-day with such feelings as the above. But to
feelings, which our community hold in common with
the entire world of musical art, there is added a deep
and unalloyed feeling of gratitude, awakened in us by
the fact that when the Conservatoire recently passed
through a difficult crisis, you generously came to us
of your own accord, and, wholly in the interests of
art, gave us the help of your pedagogic experience,
continuing, with rare self-abnegation, all undaunted
by the pressure of work, to labour in our midst for
the benefit of the young.
' Accept, then, highly honoured Herr von Henselt,
the most heartfelt brother-greeting of your associates
and sincere admirers, who see in you the last sur-
viving representative of the brilliant art pleiad of the
last quarter of our century.
' Accept with this our greeting our not less earnest
wish that it may be granted you to occupy for many,
many years to come your fame-crowned position, a
bright example to all conscientious disciples, all
laborious servants of art in our Fatherland.'
