did likewise that he knew every little service I could
render him would be a pleasure to me. But with
rather delicate eyes, and by artificial light, to read
long letters, which were often written in very crabbed
German, was indeed no light task. Still, I had my
reward, when I felt myself drawn so close to the
Meister, and he discussed various matters, both
relating to his family and to his life as a musician,
with me. Among the letters which related to music,
and especially to pianoforte music, I was especially
interested in the very charming letters of Monsieur
Conus, a Moscow professor. There were many refer-
ences in them to Henselt's method and technique;
and if Henselt's executors would entrust me with
them, I would spare no labour and pains ra trans-
lating them for publication.
It fell also to my lot this winter to enjoy the
privilege of being associated with Mademoiselle Hein-
richsen and Fraulein Calvert in correcting the proofs
of the sequel to Les Etudes preparatoires—a task in
which all three were wound up to generous emulation,
for each of us was naturally anxious not to be outdone
by the other in discovering the printer's oversights.
This sequel to the Etudes preparatoires was to be
followed by a long and exhaustive work, consisting
of seven sections, and entitled Les experiences d'un
Pianiste. These sections contained numerous diffi-
cult passages occurring in most of the great classical
composers, both ancient and modern, and they were
