did likewise that he knew every little service I could<br />

render him would be a pleasure to me. But with<br />

rather delicate eyes, and by artificial light, to read<br />

long letters, which were often written in very crabbed<br />

German, was indeed no light task. Still, I had my<br />

reward, when I felt myself drawn so close to the<br />

Meister, and he discussed various matters, both<br />

relating to his family and to his life as a musician,<br />

with me. Among the letters which related to music,<br />

and especially to pianoforte music, I was especially<br />

interested in the very charming letters of Monsieur<br />

Conus, a Moscow professor. There were many refer-<br />

ences in them to Henselt's method and technique;<br />

and if Henselt's executors would entrust me with<br />

them, I would spare no labour and pains ra trans-<br />

lating them for publication.<br />

It fell also to my lot this winter to enjoy the<br />

privilege of being associated with Mademoiselle Hein-<br />

richsen and Fraulein Calvert in correcting the proofs<br />

of the sequel to Les Etudes preparatoires—a task in<br />

which all three were wound up to generous emulation,<br />

for each of us was naturally anxious not to be outdone<br />

by the other in discovering the printer's oversights.<br />

This sequel to the Etudes preparatoires was to be<br />

followed by a long and exhaustive work, consisting<br />

of seven sections, and entitled Les experiences d'un<br />

Pianiste. These sections contained numerous diffi-<br />

cult passages occurring in most of the great classical<br />

composers, both ancient and modern, and they were
