I SO fully appreciated what Mademoiselle Heiarichsen
was giving me, that I cordially acquiesced in her wish
that I should not go to Henselt until I had been with
her at least five or six weeks. She herself, however,
was so pleased with the result of a few lessons, that
she spoke warmly to Henselt about me, and excited
his curiosity to know what I had been doing.
Meeting me on the staircase of a house where I
was visiting, he stopped me and said, ' Well, when
are you coming to me ?'
' No hurry for that, dear Meister,' I replied. ' I
am full of my work.'
But when I came home the next evening, after
having had a long lesson from Mademoiselle Hein-
richsen, what was my surprise to hear that Henselt
was sitting in the drawing-room, chatting with my
host and hostess
!
I thought, as they were old acquaintances of his,
the visit was probably meant for them, so I went at
once to my own room. The daughter of the house,
however, who had opened the door for me, came in a
minute or two to fetch me ; she said, ' His Excel-
lency has come here to see you, and has been waiting
for you a whole hour !'
How fresh and vivid it all seems now !—my hurry
to get off my wraps, and not lose one of the precious
few minutes which the Meister would still have to
spare after waiting an entire hour !
