with the same amount, and when E came to our
house that evening, he went away with a joyful heart,
carrying with him not only the means of giving his
friend present help, but with the pleasing prospect of
being able to send him into the country, where we
hoped that pure air, entire rest, and freedom from all
present anxiety, might restore him to health.
My friends both in London and in my native place
responded most kindly and promptly to my appeal
the Italians gave a little, and Sgambati soon had the
pleasure of telling his pupil that he need for the
present have no anxiety as to the means of living.
P went off, accordingly, to the country (to the
sea-shore, I believe) early in June, and in July, when
the Sgambatis and I were at the Bagni di Lucca
together, we used often to talk about P—— . He
wrote pretty regularly to Signer Sgambati; and we
all hoped, from the cheerful tone of his letters, and
the way in which he spoke about himself, that he
was on the way to complete recovery. After three
months, however, our funds began to run low. It
was still too hot for P to return to Kome, and
both Sgambati and I cast about in our minds what
we should do next to replenish our now nearly empty
exchequer. It had already been suggested that
Sgambati should play one or two pieces in some
miscellaneous entertainment, to which it was thought
