learned this from others, not from Henselt. These
were some among the many things which so endeared
the Meister to all who came into near contact with
him. There was a charm about the rugged, yet warm
and sturdily honest personality, which so inspired
many of his followers that they thought nothing of
any sacrifice of time, or trouble, if only in so doing
they were serving him.
Fraulein Calvert, one of his most gifted pupils and
best teachers—so sought after that week after week
she gave ten hour-lessons every day—had been for
years the privileged one to whom he at once sent any
new idea which he allowed himself to trace with a
pencil (for in later years he never noted music with a
pen). Here I may observe that whenever a new way
of either rendering a passage, or fingering it in any
given piece, occurred to Henselt, he insisted on his
publisher reprinting the whole ; and as he was always
very eager to get this done at once, Fraulein Calvert
thought nothing of copying out the entire piece, and
sending it back to him ready for printing.
Fraulein Heinrichsen, called in St. Petersburg ' his
right hand,' for twenty-eight years teacher in two
Imperial Institutes, is the most rigid and completely
methodical teacher of his technical side ; and I here
record my sense of obligation to her once more ; here
record, too, that having entered the school in mature
years, having enjoyed a wide culture in other fields,
I was for a long time at odds internally with her on
