He had a profound belief in the importance of this
undertaking. He writes thus on the same sheet
as the questions, which, together with his replies to
them, he reinclosed to me :
' I hope that after I
have been for many years gone away, you will dis-
cover that it is only when teaching ends are in view
that I am in my own true element.' To a question
put to him, on the other hand, as to whether any
new composition of his was coming out, he observes
thus characteristically :
' Ever since my youth I have
gone backwards in productivity, and this even where
I really wished to have done something. I thank
God that I can see this clearly.' His morning song
in G major, so full of deep feeling, and his arrange-
ment of Weber's E flat polonaise, are, according to
him 'not worthy of mention.' He disposes of his
arrangement of Mendelssohn's G minor concerto for
two pianos with the words, ' Will be attacked by many

A few days later he sent me his photograph with
the following lines
'Most esteemed Madam,
:
' April 1/13, 1878.
' I just now remember with consternation that
I omitted to enclose you the wished-for carte. Kindly
excuse me, and allow me to request that you will
favour me with your own.
' Your obedient servant,
